Module: Writing Science
Task: To produce a science writing portfolio consisting of a media release, an opinion piece, and a news feature.
Mark: 67% overall.
For each piece of the portfolio, we needed to specify an intended publication, to test how well we could adapt our writing to different audiences. I chose to aim my opinion piece at Wired readers, as the tone of Wired fit the topic of self-driving cars well. In terms of audience, I think I captured the tech-positive side well. The feedback I recieved agreed with this. However, I aimed the science content slightly too low for the piece, creating a more novice-sounding post rather than one with the authoritative technical know-how that the average Wired reader would expect
I enjoyed writing the opinion piece, as I found it quite similar to writing posts for this site. Despite that, I found including the personal touches of an opinion piece more difficult than I would if I was writing a post for here.
